Position Title: Scientific Writer

Department: National Resource Center on ADHD (NRC)

Reports to: Director, National Resource Center on ADHD

FLSA Status: Exempt

Position Description:This position supports the NRC as the primary science writer for the department and includes creating and editing all of the NRC’s written content, including the website www.help4adhd.org , fact sheets, brochures, handouts, e-newsletters, social media, reports, and publications, among others. The Writer is responsible for translating technical and scientific subject matter into content that is accessible to the general public and adheres to CDC Clear Communication guidelines and Plain Language best practices. The Writer will work closely with other NRC staff, and as needed other CHADD staff and CHADD’s Professional Advisory Board, to produce, design and disseminate NRC content.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serves as the primary content writer for the NRC website

    • Manages the production and publication of all NRC website content
    • Ensures the website’s consistency in CHADD website style and content
    • Researches and writes new content and updates existing content in collaboration with the NRC’s Research Librarian, the webmaster, and other staff
    • Integrates NRC content with CHADD information as appropriate
    • Works with staff to edit any new content they may produce
  • Creates, edits and formats NRC fact sheets and other information products including handouts, brochures, infographics, among others
  • Writes articles for the NRC’s e-newsletter and supports the newsletter editor
    • Works with NRC Health Information team to identify topics of interest
    • Works with the NRC Research Librarian to ensure that content accurately reflects the science of ADHD and incorporates new research
    • Researches topics and drafts articles, working with the NRC Director or designated staff in the review/editing process
    • Ensures content is consistent with NRC and CHADD published material, promotes CHADD programs where appropriate, and refers readers back to appropriate sections of the NRC/CHADD website
  • Works with the Multimedia Communication Specialist and other staff in creating, editing and designing social media posts
  • Develops materials for special events, such as the Annual Conference
  • Assists in writing, editing and compiling information for NRC reports and grant proposals
  • Handles other writing, editing, and administrative tasks as assigned by Director

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, English, or related field required
  • 5-7 years’ experience as a science writer
  • Experience with writing and editing for the web
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communications skills
  • Proficiency in modern business communications, including Microsoft Office, information systems technologies, web research skills and database systems
  • Proficiency in Adobe InDesign
  • Familiarity with culturally diverse populations and ability to adapt material to meet unique needs of specific populations
  • Experience using various style guides—including AP, APA and Chicago
  • Strong administrative and organizational skills with great attention to detail
  • Strong knowledge of public health and mental health issues, particularly regarding ADHD, desirable
  • Personal skills that include strong initiative, ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and capacity to work well with others
  • Editorial experience and skills or training a plus
