Affiliate of the Year, Denver Metro CHADD
Coordinators: Kim and Eric Hornak

Since beginning in March of 2010, the volunteers from Denver Metro
CHADD have helped 25-55 participants at every monthly meeting. Each
session caters to smaller groups: adults, parents and couples. The
chapter, which continues meeting throughout the
summer, provides very enriching and lively support-only meetings
that draw more than 35 participants. Because of the growing
attendance, they moved out of their original library venue into the
Denver Academy, one of the most celebrated learning-differences schools
in the state of Colorado.
During ADHD Awareness Week 2010, the chapter worked with the community
to raise awareness of the disorder. They worked with their meeting
participants to create a very attractive tile display that resided at a
large local mall until January 2011, when it was moved to the
Auraria Campus Library, a facility shared by the Community College of
Denver, Metropolitan State College, and the University of Colorado at
Denver.
Denver Metro CHADD has sought and established excellent connections with
a full range of local ADHD treatment providers, specialized retail
treatment programs, the media, and many nonprofit community
organizations. Their activities included exhibiting at disability fairs
held at local colleges, hospitals, and a high school; participating in a
day of barbecue and play at Zuma's Rescue Ranch, and an interview with a
Denver Post staff writer.
The chapter hopes to erect the tile display at Denver International
Airport for ADHD Awareness Week 2011. They are also collaborating
with Denver Academy to provide a parent/teacher education event. The
event is designed to attract educators and help them
recognize Denver Metro CHADD as an education and support
organization for teachers as well as parents. Among the chapter's
goals are increasing community visibility, building more connections to
other community organizations, and encouraging funding
opportunities.
The Denver Metro CHADD chapter has done an excellent job of bringing
education, support, and awareness to their community. In a short period
of time, its members have accomplished a lot. CHADD appreciates
their time, dedication, expertise, and support to help improve the lives
of people with ADHD.
