Plenary Session 1: Thursday, November 10
Timothy Wilens, MD

Dr. Timothy E. Wilens is Associate Professor of Psychiatry at
Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. In addition, he is
Director of the Substance Abuse Services in the Pediatric
Psychopharmacology Clinic at Massachusetts General Hospital.He is triple
boarded in Adult, Child/Adolescent, and Addiction Psychiatry. Dr.
Wilens’ research interests include the relationship of Attention
Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), bipolar disorder, and substance
abuse, and the pharmacotherapy of ADHD across the lifespan and juvenile
bipolar disorder. His peer reviewed articles concerning these and
related topics number more than 170, and are published in prestigious
journals such as JAMA, the American Journal of Psychiatry, Archives of
General Psychiatry, and Pediatrics. Dr. Wilens has also published more
than 65 book chapters, and 225 abstracts and presentations for national
and international scientific meetings.
Controversies & Current Trends in Treating
ADHD a keynote address by Timothy Wilens, MD
Children with ADHD age 15-26 years have special issues related to the
number of upcoming transitions in their life. In addition to functioning
& living independently from their families, these youth are at risk
for cigarette smoking and substance abuse. In this key note address,
major life transition along with ADHD, other major psychiatric and
substance related problems, and their treatment will be discussed.

Russell Barkley, PhD

Dr. Barkley is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Medical
University of South Carolina. He is a Diplomat in Clinical
Neuropsychology, Clinical Psychology, and Clinical Child and Adolescent
Psychology and has published more that 200 articles and book chapters as
well as 19 books on ADHD and related topics.
Edward Hallowell, MD
Father of three, all of whom have ADD, Dr. Hallowell is a
psychiatrist who has both ADD and dyslexia himself. He heads The
Hallowell Centers in New York City and in Sudbury, Massachusetts.
With an undergrad degree in English from Harvard College, an M.D. from
Tulane University, and a residency and fellowship in adult and child
psychiatry at Harvard and the Massachusetts Mental Health Center, Dr.
Hallowell is an internationally acclaimed authority on ADD. Known
for his best-selling books, Dr. Hallowell writes a column that regularly
appears in newspapers and magazines across the country and has been a
guest on numerous national television shows including multiple
appearances on Good Morning America, 20/20, The Oprah Winfrey Show, and
The Today Show. He continues to see patients of all ages in his
offices in New York and Sudbury while also consulting to schools and
businesses and remaining an active speaker and advocate for those who
learn differently.
ADHD: Gift or Curse? a keynote address by
Russell Barkley, PhD and Edward Hallowell, MD
Drs. Barkley and Hallowell will discuss their respective views on ADHD
and share evidence concerning both the adverse effects of ADHD on major
life activities as well as the positive outcomes of some ADHD cases.
