A pioneer in the identification of gender differences in ADHD

Ellen B. Littman, PhD, is a clinical psychologist whose work has significantly shaped the understanding of ADHD in women and girls. For more than three decades, she has studied attentional disorders and the ways ADHD can present differently across individuals. Dr. Littman also created a video training program on women with ADHD for the American Medical Association’s continuing education program, helping advance physicians’ understanding of ADHD.

The American Psychological Association has described Dr. Littman as a pioneer in identifying gender differences in ADHD. At a time when research and diagnostic criteria largely focused on boys, her work helped draw attention to the ways ADHD often appears differently in girls and women. Through her research, clinical practice, and professional education, she has helped clinicians better recognize these differences and improve diagnosis and treatment.

Dr. Littman is also widely recognized for her writing and professional education within the ADHD community. She is coauthor of the influential book Understanding Girls with ADHD and has contributed chapters to several other major works, including Understanding Women with ADHD, Gender Differences in ADHD, and The Hidden Side of Adult ADHD. Through her research, teaching, and advocacy, Dr. Littman has helped expand understanding of ADHD across the lifespan and ensure that the experiences of women and girls are included in the broader ADHD conversation.
