Parents as Shepherds, Not Engineers

I have often viewed one aspect of my relationship with parents of children with ADHD as that of a guide, bringing to them the latest in scientific findings and demonstrating how they might be interpreted.

Most LGBTQ Youth Can’t Access Mental Health Care. How Schools Can Help

A majority of LGBTQ students in every state except two said they sought mental health care but were unable to access it, according to a Trevor Project report. In Vermont and Minnesota, 45 percent and 49 percent of LGBTQ youth, respectively, were not able to get the mental health care that they wanted, the report found. In all other states, the percentage of LGBTQ youth who were not able to access mental health care ranged from 50 percent to 72 percent, with Nevada having the highest percentage of such students.



Psychosocial Familial Factors Associated With Symptom Severity for Pediatric ADHD

Parenting stress, negative parenting practices, broken parental partnership, critical life events, parental psychopathologies, socioeconomic status, and single-parent family were all significantly associated with ADHD symptom severity. New research has identified several familial factors that are seemingly linked to symptom severity for pediatric patients with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).



DEA Pressed ADHD-Drug Makers About Impact of Telehealth Firms on Surging Demand

The Drug Enforcement Administration told makers of medication for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder that it was concerned that “aggressive marketing practices” by companies including telehealth providers could be driving excessive prescriptions, according to a letter from the agency. While the letter doesn’t cite specific companies, it reflects the DEA’s concerns about marketing efforts for ADHD treatment by telehealth companies such as Cerebral Inc. and Done Global Inc., whose prescribing practices the agency has been investigating.

2 Things It’s Best Not to Say to Children With ADHD

KEY POINTS: Kids with ADHD may seem unruly at times, but the behavior is not necessarily intentional, nor simple for them to control. How adults respond to kids' ADHD can shape their self-view and dictate whether conduct disturbances develop. Telling an ADHD child to "behave" or that they need "to just focus" doesn't consider their internal experience and can engender defensiveness.



Work-related Stress and Mental Illness in Adults with ADHD

The following is a summary of the “Stress and work-related mental illness among working adults with ADHD: a qualitative study” published in the November 2022 issue of Psychiatry by Oscarsson et al. Few studies have examined the experience of working as an adult with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD), despite the fact that many adults with ADHD underachieve professionally, are more stressed, and have more days of sickness absence than those without ADHD.
