Workaholism and Psychiatric Disorders – Is there a relationship between work addiction and OCD, ADHD and depression?

A few weeks ago, my colleagues and I received a lot of media coverage around the world for our latest study on workaholism that was published in the journal PLOS ONE. The study involved researchers from the University of Bergen (Norway) and Yale University USA) and is probably the largest ever study done on the topic as it included 16,426 working Norwegian adults. Our study got a lot of press attention because we examined the associations between workaholism and a number of different psychiatric disorders.



Are the 2011 AAP Guidelines Influencing How Often We Diagnose and Treat ADHD in Preschoolers?

If you care for patients in the primary care setting, it has become common for parents of preschoolers to ask if their child might be hyperactive and ask about their need to start medication for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In fact during the last decade there has been an increasing trend of children age 4-5 years diagnosed and often treated with a stimulant medication for what was considered ADHD. For this reason the AAP in 2011 put out evidence-based guidelines to help all of us better decide whether a preschool child really meets diagnostic criteria for ADHD or not, and when pharmacologic treatment is warranted.



Current screening tools for ADHD may be inaccurate for children with autism

Clinicians should be cautious when assessing test results of children with autism who are evaluated for attention-deficit/hyperactivity symptoms because screening tools do not appropriately distinguish those symptoms with symptoms associated with autism spectrum disorder, according to recently published study findings.



ADHD Drug Plus Therapy Can Improve Cognitive Outcomes for TBI Patients

A combination of the stimulant drug methylphenidate — known as Ritalin — with a process known as cognitive-behavioral rehabilitation is showing promise as a way to help people who suffer from persistent cognitive problems following traumatic brain injury (TBI), according to a new study. Researchers at Indiana University School of Medicine...compared the effectiveness of two forms of cognitive therapy with and without the use of methylphenidate, a drug used to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.



ADHD makes for better entrepreneurs

Entrepreneurship researcher Johan Wiklund of Syracuse University was alerted to the link between ADHD and entrepreneurship after family experiences led him to learn more about mental health issues. This encouraged him to look at how ADHD can be a positive influence. We spoke to Wiklund about his research."
