Now and Zen: Lower prenatal stress reduces risk of behavioral issues in kids

Expectant mothers may want to consider adopting today's trend towards stress management, in light of new research pointing to its ability to lower the risk of problematic behavior in their offspring. Researchers found that mothers who are exposed to high levels of stress during pregnancy have kids who are more than twice as likely to have chronic symptoms of hyperactivity and conduct disorder.



Read this before paying $100s for neurofeedback therapy

Update August 2017: In Lancet Psychiatry, a new triple-blind, randomised controlled trial of neurofeedback therapy for adult ADHD compared with sham neurofeedback (client thinks they're getting neurofeedback but they're not) or CBT-style therapy. All three groups showed improvements in symptoms. The neurofeedback group showed no greater improvements than the other groups.

Helping Children With ADHD Beat Boredom

There have been a few studies looking at the correlation between ADHD traits and boredom. In the first study, researchers found that people who get bored easily are more likely to exhibit symptoms of ADHD, both in attention deficits and hyperactivity. The second study came up with similar results: those prone to boredom had increased symptoms of ADHD and depression as well as faring poorly on sustained-attention measures.

For quite some time now, I’ve been urging my colleagues to follow the science on the powerful impact of choline on the brain...In that same article, we highlighted the work by researchers at the University of Colorado at Denver, Aurora, proposing that a form of choline may prevent the development of autism, ADHD, and schizophrenia by an epigenetic mechanism involving a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (Am J Psychiatry. 2016 May 1;173[5]:509-16).
