ADHD Medications During Pregnancy: What Does the Latest Meta-Analysis Tell Us?
A new meta-analysis examines ADHD medication use during pregnancy, finding reassuring results for most outcomes while identifying a possible small increase in cardiovascular malformations with methylphenidate.
How the menstrual cycle might alter ADHD symptoms in women taking stimulant medication
The menstrual cycle appears to modulate the severity of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) traits in women taking common stimulant medications. A new small study suggests that these traits peak in severity during menstruation and ease soon after, pointing toward a need for hormone-aware treatment plans. The research was published in the Journal of Attention Disorders.
Rare variants in folate receptor gene linked to ADHD and infections in pregnancy
A new study suggests that macrophages and folate receptors may influence brain development and pregnancy health, and they point to a gene worth studying further.
Hidden ADHD common in women seeking treatment for depression and anxiety
A recent study reveals that nearly one in five women seeking treatment for anxiety or depression also have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, with nearly half of those cases having never been previously diagnosed. New Research on Omega-3s and ADHD
[Excerpt] The Study: Previous meta-analyses have generally found only modest overall benefits with mixed results. This mixed-results pattern may reflect the fact that children who had low omega-3 levels to begin with stand to benefit more than those whose levels are already adequate. This meta-analysis set out to test that idea directly, asking whether a child's baseline omega-3 status predicts how well they respond to supplementation.
ADHD medication amplifies brain response to grammatically ambiguous sentences, study finds
In a neuroimaging study published in PNAS, a team of researchers led by the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen recorded the brain activity of healthy adults during sentence comprehension after raising catecholamine levels with stimulant medication (methylphenidate). Higher catecholamine levels led to stronger recruitment of cognitive resources during processing of grammatically ambiguous sentences, showing how neurochemical systems may shape language processing.
